Brain Research:
Is the Brain a Computer? Or do We Have a Soul?
The brain is often compared to a computer, but modern research indicates that the brain works in a different and far more advanced way than even the most advanced computers. Our knowledge of the function of the central nervous system is still very limited. This is particularly true when it comes to the mechanisms behind thoughts, feelings, artistic experiences, etc. However, recent technological advances (such as modern brain scanning methods) give us an insight into the function of the living brain. Furthermore, studies of neurological and psychiatric disorders have provided information as to what our brain is suited to working with. More specifically, many religious, supernatural, or mysterious experiences may be paralleled with abnormalities, e.g. in connection with psychoses. Thus, brain research may provide arguments in the debate as to whether or not we have a soul.
